HEALTH & WELLNESS TIPS FOR THE WFH ROUTINE

Dhara Tanna, Senior Vice President, Fitternity shares tips to work from home productively

HEALTH & WELLNESS TIPS
FOR THE WFH ROUTINE

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to stay indoors, nations across the globe are trying their best to tackle this unprecedented situation in a precautionary way. Earlier this year, with an intent to contain the spread of COVID-19 the Indian government had issued a mandatory directive of nationwide lockdown.

While the government’s attempt to curb the spread of this virus is in progress, the extension of the lockdown period has led to individuals working from their homes and in turn has resulted in an overall psychological impact.

While a few are taking this in their stride and are finding different ways to utilize their free time by either indulging in activities, there are a few who are finding it difficult to cope with this situation. The feeling of confinement due to the quarantine period has in turn added to the fear and anxiety surrounding the pandemic.

It has affected people to experience heightened feelings of unrest, uncertainty and loneliness. I have discovered during this time that perhaps the best way to handle this predicament is with a positive approach and taking each day as it comes. I’ve taken the liberty of listing out a few things that have helped me stay upbeat and positive during this pandemic. I hope you find these tips useful.

a) Entertainment and relaxation
We live in a time where technological advancements are at their best, and utilising these can really go a long way in tackling boredom. Shows and cinema from various countries and diverse genres are available to us at our fingertips. Watching a bit of light-hearted content helps me unwind and divert the mind towards positive thoughts.

b) Staying connected with friends and family
Being socially distant is essential, but being socially disconnected is not. Now that we find ourselves with ample additional time on hand, spending time with family is the best way to de-stress. If you’re away from home, video conferencing is a great way to stay in touch and host fun game sessions or interactions with family and friends.

c) Physical activities
Dance, exercise or even an evening stroll can bring some much needed positive energy during this time. It’s great in terms of immunity building, keeping the body healthy and also improves the quality of sleep and overall well-being.

d) Virtual counselling
This is a difficult time for everyone. For those who are finding it really stressful to cope with the situation or for those who are experiencing greater anxiety and distress, mental health professionals are now making their assistance available virtually. It is a good idea to talk to someone professional (who will keep information confidential) if you’re feeling unusually anxious, depressed or disturbed.

e) Limit exposure to pandemic related information:
While it is essential to be updated with the latest updates about the pandemic, I really believe you should limit exposure to the same. If you’re constantly reading up about the pandemic, you are more likely to have negative thoughts, anxiety and depression.

f) Meditation:
Honestly, few things are as calming and helpful as meditation. I find it very helpful to keep the mind relaxed and it also allows me to unwind after a hectic day. Again, there are experts online who can help you with meditation.

g) Maintain and health diet:
Tempting as it may seem, keep away from junk and snacks that are high in sugar and salt. A good diet is helpful in keeping your health and mental fitness levels high, and also boosts productivity.

It’s not always easy, but a little discipline and focus on health and wellness will really make a difference in these exceptionally tough times. I hope these tips help you during these days in the same way that they have helped me. Stay strong, stay safe!
